Mallards exit the Irish Cup

The Mallards fell narrowly short with their attempt to reach the Quarter Finals of the Tennent's Irish Cup for only the second time in our history.

It all seemed to be going so well when Stephen O'Flynn and Shane McGinty netted first half goals, with Jason McCartney on assist duties, but Johnny McMurray pulled a goal back before the break.

As the game progressed the home side spurned several good chances but the Mallards defended resolutely and looked to be heading for victory. However on 88 minutes McMurray pounced on a loose ball within the penalty area to score a late equaliser.

In extra time the home side again missed several good chances but Armstrong and Curran also went close for Ballinamallard.

With the sides unable to be separated, the match went to penalties, and Ballymena progressed.

Another very encouraging performance from the Mallards who now play Glentoran on Tuesday evening in Belfast before returning to Ballymena again next Saturday.
